Ep 57: 4 Quick SEO Wins You Can Implement Today
Jun 09, 2022Today's episode is all about actionable SEO tactics that you can use right now.
Hey everybody, Jim Lastinger here. Welcome to another episode of Marketing in 10. So today's episode is going to be stuffed with SEO value. So all killer, no filler. I'm giving you four SEO quick wins that you can implement immediately. So let's just dive right in.
So quick win number one, do a site search for your site on Google and see what your search results look like. If you don't know how to do that in your browser, in the Google in the search bar, go to Google. You want to enter the word site then colon, and then your route domain name. So for my own site, I would do site:jimlastinger.com. That's the search term that you would put in there and what's going to happen is that's going to give you a list of your top pages that are actually in Google's index. And some of the things that you'll want to pay attention to here are the pages that show up and what those individual search snippets for the pages say.
So the pages that show are the ones that Google deems the most important about your site. If one of your primary organic landing pages is further down the list, then you might want to spend some time building it out a little bit further, adding more content, making it more valuable.
If the search snippet, which is ideally going to be your title tag and meta description, if that search snippet doesn't look good, it doesn't look correct, then you'll want to spend some time correcting that, editing it, whatever it takes. Notice if there are any words that get cut off, things like that. You want to make it look good. I always tell people to think about your search snippet like an ad. So think about it as ad copy. What content can you put there? That's going to make people click on your ad versus somebody else's that shows up? So that's how you think about that. You can identify a lot of issues with your site just by doing this simple search.
Quick win number two, make sure you have a call to action in your meta descriptions, at least on your most important organic landing pages. So a call to action should drive more people to click your search result, which ultimately increases your organic click-through rate, which should in turn increase your rankings over time. So that kind of goes back to point number one as well. Make sure you have a call to action in that search snippet that shows up.
Quick win number three, if you have an FAQ page on your site, make sure that you're using the correct schema markup for that. I believe it's called the questions and answers page schema. That gives you a very defined way to tell search engines that this page is full of questions and the answers to those questions.
So implementing this schema allows you to be eligible to show your answers to those questions directly on the search results page. So if you are answering a question that someone commonly searches for, if they enter that search directly in a Google search, for example, then your answer might be shown for that question. And I'll put a link to that schema format in the show notes so that you can see what it looks like and implement it for yourself.
Finally, quick win number four, you always want to be running at least one SEO test. So A/B testing is something that every SEO needs to be doing. I'm going to be doing a full episode on how to do SEO testing here in the near future so stay tuned for that. But to summarize, think about one aspect of your SEO, such as the page title for your most popular organic landing page and see if you can make it even better.
And then you'll want to keep track of the changes and see if you get more or less organic traffic after making that change. Just document everything. It's a simple process, but it's not easy. It's all about keeping good records and making incremental gains.
All right, so there you have it, four SEO items that you can start working on today. These are the types of SEO tactics that tend to make more impact in the short-term. So I encourage you to make them part of your SEO routine and you do these things over and over, and I'll have a show notes and a transcript available at jimlastinger.com/57.
And if you would, please take a minute to rate and review the show. If you got some value out of this, I'd love that. It'll help me grow the show and reach more people, which is my ultimate goal here. I want to help as many people as I can.
